If Maritzburg United are to have any chance of success in tomorrow’s Telkom Knockout final against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, they will have to take their chances in front of goal. The KwaZulu-Natal side go into the game as heavy underdogs against a star-studded Sundowns, but showed in their semi-final victory over Kaizer Chiefs that they can be a handful for the big guns.Central to that success was striker Judas Moseamedi, maligned throughout his career as wasteful in front of goal. But he is a player who has scored a Telkom Knockout final winner, which he netted for Cape Town City against SuperSport United in 2016.That victory was also achieved under current Maritzburg coach Eric Tinkler, who seems able to get the best out of the 25-year-old forward.Moseamedi was born in Tzaneen and made his Premier Soccer League debut with Mpumalanga Black Aces in the 2015-16 season, scoring two goals in his first five appearances. He was mainly used off the bench in that campaign by then coach Muhsin Ertugral and made the move to the Mother City, when the club’s franchise was sold to form Cape Town City and he was first united with Tinkler. He made his name there as a super substitute, scoring six goals in his maiden season including that cup-final winner just four minutes after coming off the bench. His star faded in Cape Town after Tinkler left and despite a maiden goal for Bafana Bafana in the 2017 COSAFA Cup, he was shipped off on loan to Free State Stars by new City coach Benni McCarthy after failing to impress under his tutelage. That loan spell lasted only six months before he was sent back to City and then sent out on loan again in January 2019 to Maritzburg. His goals towards the end of the campaign helped the club keep their top-flight status. This bustling forward has just a single league goal this campaign, but his brace in the Telkom Knockout semi-final against Chiefs showed all his qualities and Tinkler will hope that form extends into the final. Overall Moseamedi has 21 goals in 114 appearances in all competitions.
